NPRI 2020 Reporting Year Deadline Extended

 In Environmental Reporting

With the COVID-19 pandemic, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has decided to extend the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) submission deadline from June 1st to September 30th, 2021. The 2020 reporting module will also not be accessible until ECCC makes it available in July. This means that facilities and suppliers falling behind gathering the necessary information as a result of delays due to COVID and temporary closures will now have a buffer to provide consultants with the required information for the assessment.

Who Needs to Report?

ECCC require facilities to report to the NPRI, if owners or operators meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • If your employees work more than 20,000 hours per year, which is roughly 10 full-time employees.
  • If your facility uses, releases, manufactures, or processes one or more NPRI substances above the corresponding reporting thresholds.
  • If your facility consists of fuel combustion, wood preservation, incineration, or wastewater treatment activities and operations.

What Needs to be Reported?

This year, the Nation Pollutant Release Inventory covers 323 substances across all 5 Parts of the program, each substance with its corresponding reporting threshold(s). Apart from quantifying the usage, recycling, disposal, transfer, and release of the substances, the following information must also be reported within ECCC’s Single Window Information Manager (SWIM):

  • Facility Information
  • Contact Information
  • Pollution Prevention Activities
  • Calculation Method and Changes from Previous Year
  • Voluntary Reporting of Substances
  • Other Requirements
