NPRI 2020 Reporting Year Changes

 In Environmental Reporting

Every year, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) make changes to the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) program. Common changes may include adding and/or deleting substances from the list, relocating substances from one Part to another, increase or decrease substance reporting thresholds etc.

For the 2020 reporting year, four (4) new substances have been added, while five (5) substances have been completely removed from the NPRI list of substances. This brings the total number of substances down to 323, from the previous 324.

The following are the four substances added to the NPRI list along with its corresponding CAS #, reporting threshold, and the Part # that the substance can be found under:

Substance Cas # Part # Threshold
Naphthenic acid fraction compounds (and their salts) NA – 47 1A 10 tonnes MPO
Azo disperse dyes NA – 46 1B 10 kg MPO
1,4-Benzenediamine, N, N’-mixed phenyl and tolyl derivatives 68953-84-4 1B 50 kg MPO
2-Propanone, reaction products with diphenylamine 68412-48-6 1B 50 kg MPO

The five substances that have completely been removed from the NPRI list are:

Substance Cas # Part #
C.I. Disperse Yellow 3 2832-40-8 1A
Decabromodiphenyl oxide 1163-19-5 1A
Adipic acid 124-04-9 5
Heavy alkylate naphtha 64741-65-7 5
White mineral oil 8042-47-5 5

In addition to the above added and removed substances, all Propylene Glycol Methyl Ether Acetate (PGMEA) isomers, including alpha-PGMEA (CAS #108-65-6), beta-PGMEA (CAS #70657-70-4), and mixtures of PGMEA (CAS #84540-57-8) must be reported as PGMEA within Part 5.

NPRI Reporting Deadline

Deadlines have been consistent from year to year with the exception for the 2019 reporting year where the reporting deadline was extended from June 1st to July 30th, 2020 due to COVID-19. This year, however, the reporting deadline for the 2020 reporting year is back to June 1st, 2021.

Are you subject to the NPRI reporting requirements?

Under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), reporting to the NPRI is mandatory if your facility falls under one of the following criteria:

  • If the facility involves activities, such as wood preservation, fuel combustion, incineration, or wastewater treatment.
  • If the facility total number of work hours exceed 20,000 hours, which is about 10 full-time employees.
  • If your facility manufactures, processes, otherwise uses, or releases any of the 323 NPRI substances above the reporting thresholds.

How Can We Help?

NPRI reporting can be complex and mistakes can easily be made with limited experience dealing with the program. As part of the framework, the facility must quantify its releases to the air, land, and water, as well as materials being recycled or sent-off site for disposal. SONAIR has years of experience completing NPRI reports for facilities of all sizes and with different types of operations. Contact one of our experts today and let us help you meet your environmental reporting obligations.

To ensure your operations align with environmental standards, including noise pollution control, our acoustic assessment report services are designed to identify and address any potential issues.
